Cynnydd - Literacy Intervention

Our new Literacy Intervention Centre, Cynnydd, has had a very successful start this term.

Well done to all the staff and pupils involved.

The focus has been on improving reading skills in both English or Welsh, and nearly every pupil who has attended for this first phase has improved their reading age by at least one year, with some pupils having improved by several years!

Year 7 and 8 pupils are enjoying the sessions and are often asking for more time, frequently attending Cynnydd during their lunchtimes.

A number of pupils no longer require the intervention as their reading skills have improved sufficiently. Some pupils will be returning for another phase to further enhance their progress with reading.

Parents have been exceptionally supportive of this initiative, and we would like to extend our thanks for this support.

Following update emails to all parents, here are some of the responses recieved:

  • ‘Thank you so much for this positive email, my son is enjoying having this intervention. So glad he will have another phase with you and so will he be.’

  • ‘Thank you for the update. My son has advised me that his reading level has increased and that he is finding the sessions are helping him, which is great to hear.’

  • ‘This is fantastic news. Thank you so much. It’s lovely to hear some good points. What age books would you recommend? I’ll get him a nice box set for Christmas as an incentive to keep going.’

  • ‘Thank you so much for letting me know. Myself and her Dad are really happy with her progress and thank you for your work with her over the last weeks, we really appreciate it.’

  • ‘Thank you so much for the email. I know she was very keen to improve in any way she could and I know when she comes home later she will be over the moon.’

  • ‘Thank you for your email. I’m glad to hear her reading age has improved.’

  • ‘I’m so pleased with this news, thank you so much for your help and the continued support, I’m very grateful.’

  • ‘It was great to read that she is making progress and gaining in her reading age. She enjoys these sessions and talks positively about them.’

  • ‘I fully support your decision to continue with these sessions. I would like them to continue for as long as possible in order for her to gain the basic skills needed to enable her to succeed in her classes and also to develop her confidence and raise her self-esteem.’

  • ‘Thank you for the update, much appreciated. Thank you for all the hard work you are doing.’

  • ‘Thank you for the update. Please can you confirm if there is anything specific that we should be doing at home so that he continues to progress.’

  • ‘Thank you for the extra support and intervention. We are very proud of him.'
