Research has shown that providing a high intensity literacy intervention programme can significantly improve a learner’s reading/comprehension age as well as develop their confidence and self-esteem, which in turn will enable the student to access the curriculum and work more independently.

This eight-week Literacy intervention programme for Key Stage 3 works on a roll-on roll-off basis. The intervention incorporates 4 one-hour sessions per week. Pupils are withdrawn from lessons and work on their structured individual programme within targeted small groups. The interventions are sharp, concise and responsive and learners will have individual feedback at the end of each session. The pupil’s progress and attendance will be tracked and entered on SMID. At the end of the eight-week block, learners are reassessed using the Diagnostic Reading Analysis/Profion Glannau Menai.

Some learners will only require one eight-week literacy intervention block, for others they may need additional 8-week blocks. The maximum a pupil will receive is 3 sets of literacy intervention blocks, after this period, pupils who have not reached their chronological reading age will require additional support measures to address their barriers to learning

Pupils who are on the targeted 8-week intervention programme will also be encouraged to attend the lunchtime club where they can access support to complete homework, read books, complete reading activities and improve their English and Welsh spoken language.
