The new Geography GCSE will be divided into 4 units:

Unit 1: Our physical and human world

Written exam 30%

The purpose of this unit is to introduce the key concepts of physical and human geography. Topics studied in this unit will include:

·         Rivers and flooding

·          Our changing coastlines and management strategies

·          Causes, impact and management of migration

·          Global cities.

Unit 2: Developing fieldwork skills

 Non-examination assessment 25%

 The purpose of this unit is to explore fieldwork skills and to develop an understanding of the enquiry process.  The theme will be set by the exam board.  Likely topics could include river characteristics, impacts of tourism or the sustainable development of our retail centres.

Unit 3: Our dynamic and diverse world

Written exam  30%

The purpose of this unit is to introduce key areas of human and physical geography, exploring the economic, social, cultural and political inter-connectedness between people and places. Topics include:

·         Inequalities, human rights and diversity

·         Weather and climate

·         Climate change

·         Physical and human global challenges, including a focus on endangered environments

Unit 4: Sustainable solutions 15%

 This is the second non-examination assessment based on a decision-making exercise set by the exam board.

The purpose of this unit is to explore current geographical issues and sustainable futures.  We will look at the three pillars of sustainability and sustainability goals, based on taking action and develop your problem solving skills.
