English Language and Literature
course information
The new GCSE English Language and Literature specification offers a single and a double award. However, the double award is recommended for most learners as it covers a broader range of literature and comprehensive language skills.
The specification combines both English Language and Literature to give students a holistic understanding of text analysis, creative expression, and practical language skills applicable to real-life scenarios.
The exam structure places emphasis on unseen texts, meaning learners will analyse and respond to materials they haven’t encountered in their coursework. This aims to develop learners’ analytical skills and ability to engage with new materials, reflecting functional language skills needed in various contexts like work, community, and daily life
This specification promotes functional language skills—practical, adaptable skills in reading, writing, and analysis. The assessment will require learners to demonstrate these skills through tasks that are applicable in community and work environments, preparing them to be active and responsible members of society.
